The Sustainable Events Management Guide

The Sustainable Event Management Guide (SEMG) was prepared with incubation from Jordan Environment union in response to ISO MENA STAR Project, aims to promote and enhance implementing the ISO standards for sustainable development in the Middle east and North Africa.

It is the first guide in Arabic Language to serves as a reference guide for organizing Sustainable Events Activities to minimize the Environmental, Social and Economic Impacts associated with organizing events.

The UN 10 year framework program on sustainable consumption and production 10YFP requires minimization of the Environmental, social and economic impacts from providing services and the associated activities, Jordan Law No. 6 of 2017 on Environmental Protection and the General Waste Management Framework Law promotes the extended producer’s responsibility and pollutant pays, in addition to the SDGs and Climate Change mitigation requirements all are emerging issues and drivers to promote sustainable events management based on the international standards.

Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES) Jordan has supported the publication of the guide and facilitating tools for implementation as part of their regional climate and energy project in MENA Region

The Guide consists of four main components:

The management system facilitated based on the international ISO Standards 20121/2012, which addresses stages of planning and implementing sustainable events activities through a sustainable approach across the event’s stages and allows for constant improvement at the end of event. The management system also contains tables to improve the adoption of the aforementioned stages and trace their completion and implementation, furthermore insuring the quality of performance and the ability to review and address different variables during implementation,  the Tables are customizable and editable based on the event’s type, size, location, target audiences

The Sustainable events requirements checklists to help assess the main activities environmental, Social and Economic Impacts and improving the sustainable performance of the event, the requirements checklists covers 10 areas of practices across the event’s main activities, the requirements checklists are customizable and editable based on the event’s type, size, location, target audiences

A means of visual communications tools of signage and free standing banners were facilitated to demonstrate visually some of the main themes of the sustainable events, all tools are incorporating the corporate identity of the guide including the implementation team vests.

The Event’s Waste Management plan template or model including on-site waste management bins, management and tracking tables. The Waste management plan template is also customizable and editable based on the event’s type, size, location, target audiences
